Movember 2013

jtribe was Movember's mobile app developer of choice in 2013. With the apps for iOS and Android, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas can now track, post, share and raise money from anywhere.

The Client

Movember is an annual worldwide event held in November to raise awareness for prostate cancer and other male cancer associated charities. The event involves growing a moustache to help raise funds. The goal of the Movember Foundation is to "change the face of men's health."

The Brief

Movember asked for a complete rebuild of their apps for Android and iOS. Social media integration was important so that the campaign could reach even more people. The app needed to have a custom design for the 2013 campaign.

It was critical for Movember, the designer and jtribe to work together closely on the project, and all key parties were based in Melbourne, Australia.

The Process

The project took 5 months to complete and was delivered in 10 iterations. The jtribe team included iOS developers, Android developers, a tester and a project director.

Movember and jtribe worked collaboratively, having established a good co-working routine from the outset. One day a week, we would work together at the jtribe office. This routine was the key to achieving a great result.

Another important routine was to run bi-weekly showcase demonstrations for the client. This kept the team focused, demonstrated progress and helped all parties to adjust the project scope when needed.

We thoroughly enjoyed working with Movember on apps that can make a difference.

The Solution

Movember's custom design gave the apps a unique personality. The apps were inspired by popular social media apps and use a sliding menu to give access to: the user’s timeline, mo tracker, their team, social media, donations, health tips, mo style guide and the legendary Movember rules.

The main focus in this year's app is on social media integration and tracking moustache growth.

The Challenges

Timing: The apps had to be available before November 1 in the Apple AppStore and on Google Play. We worked hard to hit the dates and maintain code quality even though the apps had to be created from the ground up.

Technology: We added some nifty features like face recognition in mo tracker and ability to export stop-motion videos of mo growth.

Custom user interface: We created a customised user interface to fit the look and feel of the 2013 campaign. This required a deep understanding of the underlying native technology for iOS and Android.

Multi-lingual: The app is available in multiple languages and can be updated by Movember at any time without re-submitting the apps.

Social: Integration with the four major social networks proved difficult due to the customised way information is shared within the apps.

Backend: One of our specialities is deep integration with backend systems. This skill was highly useful when connecting the apps to Movember’s massive API.
